Last night, at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the divided heart of Cyprus, we attended the premiere of “Cyprus: The Divided Island”, directed by David Castillo, which brought together voices from both sides of the border. While some were advocates of peace and others stark opponents, the documentary wove these divergent perspectives into a plural narrative that held up a mirror to the communities living in the shadow of conflict.

Although I have long studied place, division, belonging, and peacebuilding, I still encounter new testimonies that surprise me, teach me, and expand the horizons of my empathy. As one of the 32 participants featured uncensored in the documentary, what I shared was a reflection of my own lived experiences, interwoven with years of academic research.

Cyprus’s division is not merely a spatial separation; it is a masculine scene of power that fractures identity, distorts memory, and reproduces belonging in grotesque forms. This island will never find peace under the shadow of the status quo; because division does not produce peace — it only postpones it.

With approximately 200 guests attending the screening — including the ambassadors of Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, and Palestine, as well as representatives from the European Parliament and the United Nations — I wholeheartedly congratulate David, Marissa, Paula, and the entire team for this brave and thought-provoking documentary.

Dün gece Kıbrıs’ın bölünmüş kalbindeki Ledra Palace Otel’de, sınırın iki yanından gelen sesleri bir araya getiren yönetmen David Castillo’nun hazırladığı “Cyprus: The Divided Island” belgeselinin ilk gösterimindeydik. Kimi barış yanlısı, kimi keskin karşıt, farklı bakış açıları bir araya gelirken, belgesel çatışmanın gölgesinde yaşayan toplumların birbirine ayna tutan anlatılarını çoğulcu bir kurguyla buluşturdu.

Yıllardır yer, bölünmüşlük, aidiyet ve barış inşası üzerine çalışsam da hala şaşırtan, öğreten, empati ufkumu genişleten yeni röportajlarla karşılaşıyorum. Belgeselde sansürsüz bir şekilde yer alan 32 kişiden biri olarak, benim paylaştıklarım da kendi tecrübelerimin yıllara yayılan akademik çalışmalarla yoğrulmuş bir yansımasıydı.

Kıbrıs’ın bölünmüşlüğü yalnızca mekansal bir ayrışma değil; kimliği parçalayan, hafızayı çarpıtan ve aidiyeti grotesk biçimlerde yeniden üreten maskülen bir güç sahnesidir. Bu ada, statükonun gölgesinde barışı asla bulamayacak; çünkü bölünmüşlük barış üretmez, yalnızca onu erteler.

Gösterime İspanya, Fransa, İtalya, Hollanda, Polonya, Romanya, İsviçre ve Filistin büyükelçileri ile Avrupa Parlamentosu ve Birleşmiş Milletler temsilcilerinin de aralarında bulunduğu yaklaşık 200 davetlinin katıldığı, bu cesur ve düşündürücü belgesel için David, Marissa, Paula ve tüm ekibi gönülden kutlarım.
