Born in Famagusta in 1979, Dr. Ceren Boğaç is a community resilience activist and architect. She is an Associate Professor at the Eastern Mediterranean University, Department of Architecture. She has a Master and PHD in environmental psychology under the scope of architecture major from Eastern Mediterranean University . She conducted post-doctoral research on architectural design pedagogy at the Academy of Art Design and Architecture in Prague, Czech Republic. Her specific areas of expertise include sense of place, place attachment, meaning in architecture, ecocity/eco-architecture, and urban peace-building studies. She has given lectures related to the interplay between people and the environment, as well as architecture and urban design studios for more than 15 years, mainly at Eastern Mediterranean University, as well as Academy of Art Design and Architecture in Prague, and Pratt Institute New York. She has been involved in many civil society projects based on; human rights funded by the European Union (worked as a project coordinator in London, Brighton, Manchester, Brussels, Malta, and Nicosia between 2008–2010); community empowerment and peacebuilding projects supported by national and international NGOs, and local municipalities. She was invited to give numerous speeches on her research and urban peace-building projects at various institutions on both sides of the Cyprus and in different countries such as Czech Republic, Italy, Israel, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America, and Turkey. She received the European Commission Research (2010), Fulbright Visiting Scholar (2019) and various project grants. Besides her academic work, she has many award-winning and published stories in Turkish.

Meaning in Architecture

How does a space (or building) carry meanings in human settlements? If one considers architecture as transformation of social, ideological, scientific, philosophical or religious values into concrete physical forms, then it becomes possible to see the physical forms as means of visual communication for people and architecture as vehicle to communicate meanings in human societies.

Ecocity and Eco-architecture

Studying implementations of environmentally friendly and sustainable architecture and cities.

Urban Peacebuilding

Studying how to use architecture and urban design as a tool for peace-building efforts for communities in conflict and divided environments.
