Bugün, Bilkent Kentsel Tasarım ve Peyzaj Mimarlığı Bölümü (Bilkent  LAUD) öğrencileriyle bir araya geldik. Mağusa’nın tarihini, bölünmüşlüğünü, kent sorunlarını, eski sakinlerinin geri dönme ümitlerine rağmen zaman içinde donmuş ve bir gün karanlık turistlerin ziyaretine açılmış Maraş’ı konuştuk.  

Nazik davetleri ve bana  Mağusa’da barışçıl ve sürdürülebilir bir planlamanın, şeffaf olmayan süreçlerle değil, kentin önceki ve şimdiki sakinlerinin katılımı ile mümkün olacağını bir kez daha vurgulama şansı verdikleri için ders yürütücüleri Hatice Karaca ve Bülent Batuman’a teşekkür ederim.

Today, we met with students from Bilkent’s Department of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture (Bilkent LAUD). We talked about the history of Famagusta, its division, urban problems, and Varosha, frozen in time and one day opened to dark tourists despite the hopes of its former inhabitants to return.  

I would like to thank the course instructors Hatice Karaca and Bülent Batuman for their kind invitation and for giving me the chance to emphasize once again that peaceful and sustainable planning in Famagusta is not possible through non-transparent processes, but with the participation of the city’s former and current residents.
