As the Research Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Built Environment (ISBE), we held a series of seminars and hands-on workshops titled “Returning to the Ground” at the EMU Faculty of Architecture between 2–4 December 2025. The three-day program was led by designers Ergin K. Birinci, Ryszard Rychlicki, and Karolina Ferenc, whose work embraces sustainability, contextual sensitivity, and collective making through an interdisciplinary lens.

Within this framework, the Returning to the Ground installation, designed by Ergin K. Birinci, Ryszard Rychlicki and Karolina Ferenc; researched and developed in collaboration with Nest Development, and realized together with Mono Earth and Solidified, was woven for the first time with our students — through touch, exploration, and embodied learning.

Focusing on building with earth, material health, and sensory relationships with place, these inspiring designers reminded us once again that soil is not merely a construction material; it is a story, a memory, and a teacher.

Earth holds knowledge — one that speaks when touched, grows more beautiful over time, and gently calls us back to slowness and grounding.

As ISBE, we have previously carried out experimental production and material-oriented workshops at various scales; this gathering became a meaningful continuation of that tradition.

We sincerely thank Ergin, Ryszard, and Karolina for sharing their knowledge and experience with our students; Yaprak Özyalçın, founder of Nest Development, as one of the research and development partners; Çağlar İşbilir & Can Cumalı (Mono Earth), and Inana Abdulli & Kesra Mansuri (Solidified) for their inspiring input and designs; as well as our faculty and department administration for their continued support, and all students who participated with great enthusiasm.

Yapılı Çevrede Disiplinlerarası Çalışmalar Araştırma Merkezi (ISBE) olarak, 2–4 Aralık 2025 tarihlerinde DAÜ Mimarlık Fakültesi’nde “Returning to the Ground” başlıklı bir dizi seminer ve uygulamalı atölye gerçekleştirdik. Bu üç günlük program, uluslararası deneyime sahip, disiplinlerarası vizyonu benimsemiş, sürdürülebilirlik, bağlama duyarlılık ve kolektif üretim eksenlerinde çalışan tasarımcılar Ergin K. Birinci, Ryszard Rychlicki ve Karolina Ferenc tarafından yürütüldü.

Bu bağlamda, Ergin K. Birinci, Ryszard Rychlicki ve Karolina Ferenc tarafından tasarlanan; Nest Development ile birlikte araştırılıp geliştirilen ve Mono Earth ile Solidified iş birliğiyle hayata geçirilen Returning to the Ground enstalasyonu, ilk kez fakülte öğrencilerimizle birlikte örüldü — dokunarak, deneyerek, hissederek.

Toprakla yapı kurma, malzeme sağlığı ve yerle kurulan duyusal ilişki üzerine yoğunlaşan tasarım ve araştırma süreçlerini bizlerle paylaşan bu değerli tasarımcılar, bize bir kez daha toprağın yalnızca bir malzeme değil; hem hikâye, hem hafıza, hem de öğretmen olduğunu hatırlattı.

Toprak, her daim dokunulduğunda ses veren, zamanla güzelleşen, bizi yavaşlatıp yere çağıran bir bilgi taşır.

ISBE olarak daha önce farklı ölçekte deneysel üretim ve malzeme odaklı atölyeler yürüttük; bu buluşma da bu geleneğin anlamlı bir devamı oldu.
